It’s 3 weeks into your new fitness regime
It’s no so fun anymore
You’re starting to find it challenging
Motivations dwindling
And once again, your old ways are becoming more and more appealing
You’re off of your diet
3 more weeks have passed and you’re on the lounge thinking…
“That’s it, I’m starting fresh again on Monday!”
Well, first off, Monday hasn’t worked for you before so why do you keep relying on it? Because it’s easy to feed off of the initial motivational buz. We’ve heard it all before. “YEP, this is it! This time i’m doing it and nothing’s going to stop me” yet I see 5 – 8 weeks later these people are back to where they started.
Why?
It comes down to one simple thing
Those who find themselves in this situation rely on motivation and feelings to achieve progress. When real progress comes from building…
HABITS!
… Boring Nath! Building Habits isn’t exciting and I’d much rather you give something that I haven’t heard of before that might be my answer!
Now that I’ve read your mind and we’re both ready to continue on with this, Let’s Go!
The Importance of Habits
Let’s talk about the importance of habits in your path to success. Do you ever find it difficult to dry yourself after a shower? Ever noticed how you go about it? nope? That’s what I thought, though next time, notice your drying routine, it will amaze you how consistent and effortless it is!
So we have built 100’s of habits just like this one to make our days easy. Yep, there’s your favourite word guys, EASY!
Habits just start to get a little more interesting, am I right?
Habits are made exactly for this reason, to make our lives easier! Do you still think about how to tie your shoelaces? Or what about how your brush your teeth? I’m guessing that’s a no and another no. Imagine how hard these tasks would be if we didn’t have an effortless way to perform them each day. Would you brush your teeth everyday if you relied on motivation or what about your shoelaces? Wouldn’t tie them up either, maybe just start tying them again on Monday, am I right?
Yep, these analogies are getting old, but so are the excuses as to why you’re not crushing it in the gym and achieving the goals that mean so much to you. My focus is to get people achieving what they want and deserve. The path from where you are now to where you want to be is lined with habits. Nope, not luck. So if you’re someone that is serious about making sustainable change follow me through to our next chapter.
3 Reasons Why New Habits Are So Effing Hard To Implement
Yes it can be hard and yes it will challenge you to death at times, though most the time we can narrow the difficulty down to these 3 culprits.
- Energy efficient – Old habits are what get you through your day to day with the least amount of energy expenditure as possible. Your body is all about efficiency. It wants to maintain homeostasis and get through each day with as little effort as possible. Though we have goals to chase down, so this isn’t on. Research shows it takes around a month of consistency to implement a habit successfully. So be patient and stay the course
- Too much too soon – Ever heard the expression Rome wasn’t built in a day? Same goes with your habits. Don’t try and change everything at once. Small changes over time create real success. Don’t Rush habits or they will leave you quicker then they came.
- Conflicting habits – Nothing kills an new habit quicker than a conflicting old one. Old habits die hard and they also have the ability to kill your new habits before they even get a chance to thrive. Consciously base your new habits around improving your old ones over time and slowly eliminating them. Sure, sometimes the cold turkey technique works great and if this is you then go for it! If you’re someone that has struggled with this then I have the answer for you. It’s slow improvements over time. Slowly fade out your negative habits by replacing them slowly with new, healthier habits. This way we will have less conflict and more chance of sustained success.
3 Tips That Will Have You Nailing Your Habits
- Start small – Success builds success. Accumulate your little wins.
- Plan your flexibility – A day off is better than a failed day that spirals into a month away from your goals. Choose your breaks and make them count.
- DO IT WHETHER YOU FEEL LIKE IT OR NOT – I can’t stress this one enough guys. You’re not going to want to do this everyday. You’re human and life gets tough. Though the actions we take on these days is what matters most. When it’s easy, it’s easy. When it’s hard, it’s the most important.
